Dry eye syndrome is more than just a passing irritation; it’s a pervasive condition affecting so many worldwide, in which the eyes either fail to produce enough quality tears or the tears evaporate too rapidly, leaving people with persistent burning, itching, redness, and those irritating sensations.
The condition often stems from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), where the tiny oil-producing glands nestled in our eyelids become blocked, disrupting the delicate stability of the tear film.
In fact, millions grapple with this condition, spanning all age groups from the screen-obsessed to those managing various health conditions. So when these glands fail to produce sufficient oil, tears evaporate faster than normal, leaving the ocular surface exposed and vulnerable.
Dr Priya offers advanced solutions for dry eye, including the Envision system by InMode, which combines intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy with radiofrequency (RF) to target inflammation and restore gland function. These treatments are carefully tailored for various skin types and provide long-lasting relief for conditions like MGD, ocular rosacea, and blepharitis.
Following my initial interview with Dr. Priya on last year, I decided to stop researching and start treating, seeking her expertise for my own persistent eye issues that had become impossible to ignore.
The Slow Creep of Discomfort
My concerns started subtly but grew over time: constant dryness that no amount of blinking could resolve and occasional blurring that made me rub my eyes in frustration.
As someone with a desk-bound job and a lifestyle involving a lot of screen time, I thought my eye concerns could be down to several things. Air conditioning, central heating, the urban pollution of citylife, and even my skincare routine. It was frustrating that this regular discomfort impacted my focus and daily life.
When I finally sat down with Dr Priya for my consultation, she confirmed my suspicions with clinical precision. And after examining my eyes again this month, she delivered the verdict: my oil glands were blocked, and I’d be a great candidate for treatment.
Anything from the dry indoor environments I navigated daily, and possibly skincare products seeping into my lid margins, could have led to these blockages, which were leading to chronic irritation. It was definitely relieving to have a clear diagnosis and, more importantly, a plan forward.
My Envision Experience: Innovation Meets Inclusivity
The treatment itself was straightforward, surprisingly relaxing, and genuinely eye-opening—pun intended.
Dr Priya used the Envision IPL system, which delivers targeted pulses of light to heat and unblock glands while simultaneously reducing inflammation around the eyes. What makes this technology truly innovative is its dual-action approach: the IPL penetrates deeper than traditional methods, addressing root causes all without invasive surgery.
Crucially, for someone with Black skin like me, the Envision technology has proven exceptionally adaptable. Historically, IPL carried risks for darker skin tones—concerns about pain and depigmentation have been in dermatological treatments. However, using lower energy levels and specialised filters can minimise risks like pigmentation changes.
This aligns with recent research showing that higher wavelengths with lower energy can be just as effective while dramatically reducing side effects for patients with Fitzpatrick skin types III-V.
My session was quick, with minimal discomfort—just a warm, tolerable sensation—and I noticed improved moisture almost immediately.
My Take-Home Regime
To bridge the gap between in-clinic treatments, Dr. Priya equipped me with a comprehensive take-home kit designed to extend and enhance the results. This included eye drops for instant hydration, a gentle foam eye wash to cleanse lids and reduce bacterial buildup, and the standout product that has become my new fav ritual: the Peep Club Heated Eye Wand.
The wand applies consistent heat (optimally around 40 – 43°C) combined with gentle vibration massage and optional LED therapy to the eyelids. Its purpose is elegantly simple yet scientifically sound: to liquefy the hardened oils, allowing them to flow freely and restore the tear film’s protective lipid layer, which prevents evaporation.
The key advantage, like most things, is consistency. Unlike a washcloth that cools within minutes, devices like this wand maintain therapeutic temperature throughout the treatment session, ensuring the glands receive adequate heat to function properly.
I’ll be testing out this daily ritual over the next couple months. Follow along @jasminepiakan
Why This Matters Now More Than Ever
As dry eye surges in modern society, it’s crucial that we prioritise this organ. Modern habits disrupt natural blinking and tear production, accelerating gland atrophy even in younger demographics now. Optometrists now warn that even pediatric populations are at risk due to early and excessive device use.
Ignoring early signs risks chronic issues that compound over time. The good news? Effective treatments exist! and they’re more accessible than ever.
Whether it’s advanced in-clinic technologies like Envision that address root causes, or daily maintenance tools like heated wands that keep glands functioning optimally, we have options.
In our screen-saturated, fast-paced world, tuning into your eyes isn’t just smart—it’s essential for sustained well-being.
